PopulationBulgaria has a population of 7, 5 million. The Bulgarians are actually Slavs and constitute 88, 3 % of the polpulation. The largest minority are the Turks (8 %), followed by the Armenians (0, 3 %) and the Russians (0, 2 %). People are friendly and very hospitable, always ready to help.
Visas and CurrencyYou can visit Bulgaria without a visa up to 30 days (British) and up to 90 days (member countries of Schengen) If you wish to stay longer than 30/90 days, apply for a visa at the Bulgarian embassy in your home country. Arriving home after your trip to Bulgaria, your passport should be still valid for another 6 months. The local currency is Lev. One lev = 100 stotinki (the Bulgarian cents). 1 euro = 1, 95 lev
Language and ReligionBulgarian is a South Slavonic language and makes use of the Cyrillic alphabet. Most well educated people speak English, German or French. The road signs along the main roads are both in Latin and Cyrillic, but along secondary roads almost everything is written in Cyrillic.
The Orthodox religion was introduced in 865 A.D. as official religion. The head of the Orthodox Church is Patriarch Maxim. Bulgaria also has a small Catholic community, as well as small communities of Armenians and Jews. About 13 % of the population is Muslim.
Food and DrinksA cup of coffee or a beer at one of the many café's costs you about half an Euro. For a dinner for two you pay 15 to 20 euro. Nothing compares to the sweet Bulgarian fruits. Just eat for once a juicy Bulgarian peach, water melon or some grapes, and you will never forget how they taste. Don't leave Bulgaria without tasting the world famous Bulgarian yoghurt and the excellent local wine.
