The Rila and Pirin mountains in the south-west corner of Bulgaria are a symbol of eternal beauty and never ending challenge. Enjoy high mountain trekking from deep valleys to proud summits. Take the chance to climb Mussala (2925m) and Vihren (2914m), the highset peaks on the Balkan Peninsula. Soak in the palpable peace of a mountain village. Day-to-day-program
Day 1
Your English speaking guide welcomes you at Sofia Airport. After a transfer of about an hour and a half you arrive at the ski resort Borovets ( 1350m ) - a good starting point for trekking and hiking in Rila. A free welcome drink and dinner. Overnight in Borovets.

Day 2
We take the gondola lift to Yastrebets Hut ( 2369m ). A staggering view over five of the highest summits in Rila spreads before our eyes. We start climbing to the Mussala Hut built on the edge of the Mussala Lake. Weather permitting, the fittest trekkers continue to the Mussala peak. The rest can start exploring the virgin nature all around. Dinner and overnight in Govedartsi - a small village at the foot of the mountains.

Day 3
The mini bus takes us to the Vada Hut and, led by our mountain guide, we start climbing to the area of the Seven Rila Lakes. On the way we visit the spectacular Skakavitsa waterfall. Rila is a steep mountain for hiking, but the gorgeous views, flora and birdlife are definitely worth it. Dinner and overnight in Govedartsi.

Day 4
We arrive at Bulgaria's oldest and richest monastery, dating back to the 10th c. Nestled between the steep mountain slopes, Rila Monastery has always offered the weary travellers shelter and warmth, spiritual comfort and peace. Tonight a tasty Bulgarian meal, well washed down with some excellent local wine, awaits you at a cosy "mehana ", the traditional style Bulgarian tavern. Overnight at a cosy family hotel near to the monastery.

Day 5
After a 2 hour drive we reach the little old town Bansko at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Bansko is a surprising combination of old history, rich culture and the modern facilities of Bulgaria's most popular ski resort. If you wish, you can start your exploration of the Pirin Mountains with a choice of hikes in the Banderitsa River Valley. Dinner and overnight in Bansko.

Day 6
After breakfast you lace up your trekking shoes and head for the Fish Lake and the Long Lake. The sparkling water of the lake reflects the grandeur of Mt.Vihren ( 2915m ), the highest summit in Pirin. For dinner we are going to try several local delicacies and the home-made blue berries jam, topping a heap of tasy Bulgarian yoghurt, served in a clay pot. Overnight in

Day 7
Those of you, who want to climb Mt.Vihren, led by an expert mountain guide, start their trekking adventure. The rest can visit the oldest tree in the area or travel to the nearby village of Dobrinishte, renowned for its mineral water spring and its virgin nature. Dinner and overnight in Bansko.

Day 8
Today you can take some rest. If you decide to explore Bansko, the St.Trinity Church, the icon exhibition and the Crafts and Textiles exhibition are worth seeing. Bansko seems to be the best place to buy a hand-made, authentic souvenir. Dinner and overnight in Bansko.

Day 9
We are on our way to Sofia. You have the rest of the day free. With a farewell dinner at a Bulgarian folk style restaurant you conclude this trip, carrying away something from Bulgaria, which cannot fit in your suitcase. Dinner and overnight in the neighbourhood of Sofia.
