Autumn 2010 – Migrating Birds

price: Prices starts from € 1095 p.p.

date of departure:

25-08-2010

This tour is designed to visit significant watch points along the Black Sea coastal wetlands, Cape Kaliakra  and the steppe of North East Bulgaria. We use these three bases to explore migrants and resident species alike.

Each day brings a feeling of mounting thrill and surprise.

One day we take small country roads in the steppe, close to the feeding grounds of hundreds of birds.

Next day the open sky is filled with numerous flocks of storks streaming south following routes as ancient as the land itself.

Few bird watching experiences can compare with the thrill of observing migration in action.

Upon request, other dates and smaller groups are also possible, in the period between 1 August and 15 October 2010.

Day-to-day-program

Day 1

Arrival in Sofia and transfer to the hotel in Bankya. It is a quiet spa town situated at the foothills of Lyulin Mountains. The gentle wooded hills, home to various bird species, are so luring and inviting.  Free welcome drink and dinner.

Day 2

Today we head for Russenski Lom National Park, a World Heritage Site of UNESCO, housing more than 192 bird species, 174 of them under protection. We keep our eyes and ears open for the Eurasian Eagle Owl, the Egyptian Vulture, the Black Stork, the Long-legged Buzzard and many more.

Day 3

Bird-watching, packed lunch and more birding. At the end of the day we drive to Srebarna Nature Reserve. For the more energetic there is the possibility of a nocturnal birding. Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable guesthouse, situated at the edge of Lake Srebarna - The Silver Lake.

Day 4

The whole day we spend birding, focusing on a great colony of herons, Dalmatian & White Pelicans, Spoonbills, Egrets, Ferruginous Ducks, Glossy Ibises, Caspian Terns and many othrers. Packed lunch, more rewarding birding, dinner and overnight stay in the guesthouse.
Day 5

We continue our bird-watching tour in the direction of the Northern Black Sea Coast lakes Shabla & Durankulak. We spot more water birds and a huge number of migrating storks. Keep your eyes open for the Black Storks! Packed lunch, more birding, dinner and overnight stay at a cosy hotel just 30m from the beach.
Day 6

More birding in the morning. After our packed lunch we carry on to Cape Kaliakra. In this virgin Nature Reserve we can spot Red-footed Falcon, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Red-throated & Tawny Pipit, Pied Wheat Eater, etc. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7

Today we are on our way to the Emen Gorge. The winding river has cut its way creating a steep ravine, housing a great variety of rock birds. However, do not be surprised when you see and hear a lot more other bird species: the sparkling  Golden Oriole, the Linnet, the Grey Flycatcher, the Yellow Quick Start, the Middle-spotted Woodpecker and a lot more. Dinner and overnight stay at Bungalow Park with a swimming pool.

Day 8

One more day of great birding! When we are done, we drive to Sofia for our farewell dinner. Overnight stay at the same hotel as on Day 1. Start packing, because you will carry something home which does not fit in your suitcase!

Day 9

Transfer to Sofia Airport and departure.
